What is Telomere?
Telomere is the ends of a chromosome. The length of telomeres is known to shorten each time when cell divides. Over time, the chromosomes become damaged and the cells die.
Telomeres shorten each time a cell divides, which is a natural part of the aging process. This shortening of telomeres has been linked to cellular aging and the development of age-related diseases.
Why is telomere length important?
As a normal cellular process, a small portion of telomeric DNA is lost with each cell division. When telomere length reaches a critical limit, the cell undergoes senescence and/or apoptosis. Telomere length may therefore serve as a biological clock to determine the lifespan of a cell and an organism.
How can I increase my telomere length?
1. The most important one is : Eat a healthy diet: A diet rich in whole foods, fruits, and vegetables may help to slow down the shortening of telomeres.
Consumption of Specific Foods. Telomere length is positively associated with the consumption of legumes, nuts, seaweed, fruits, and 100% fruit juice and coffee, whereas it is inversely associated with consumption of alcohol, red meat, or processed meat.
2. Exercise regularly: Exercise has been shown to increase telomerase activity, the enzyme that helps to maintain telomere length.
3. Manage stress: Stress and anxiety can cause our telomeres to accelerate telomere shortening. Practicing stress-reducing activities such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises may help to slow down telomere shortening.
4. Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep has been linked to shorter telomeres. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
5. Consider supplements: Studies suggest that taking certain supplements, such as vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, may help to lengthen telomeres.
